A qualification, a test and a card are different
The qualification
Shows the learning or occupational competence required for your card route. Completing a course does not itself issue a CSCS card.
The health and safety test
Checks the relevant health and safety knowledge. A CITB test pass alone does not replace the qualification or registration evidence.
The CSCS card
Is issued after CSCS accepts your application and evidence. A course purchase, test booking or application payment is not card approval.
Start with your occupation
Labouring work
The Green Labourer card is for unskilled labouring duties. The Level 1 qualification and Operatives test are separate requirements. The first card lasts two years; qualifying renewals last five years. It is not the right card for a skilled trade.
Skilled trades
Use the qualification or recognised apprenticeship for your occupation to check the appropriate Skilled Worker route. A separate Level 1 Labourer course is not automatically needed. The test must match the trade and card requirements.
Supervisory or management work
Check both the level and subject of your qualification. A Gold Supervisory card is different from a Gold Skilled Worker card; supervisors normally need the Specialist Supervisory test, while management routes use Managers and Professionals.
Apprentices and people in training
An Apprentice or Trainee route may fit your registration and experience. Red cards have different evidence, test and validity rules, so check the specific route. Do not choose a Labourer card simply because you are new to the industry.
Use the official CSCS Card Finder to check your exact occupation and qualification. If you already hold a card, confirm whether you need a renewal or a different card after a change of role.
Your application steps
Choose the card for your occupation
Check your job and existing qualifications in the official CSCS Card Finder before buying training or booking a test. Card colour alone does not establish eligibility, and some occupations are covered by another CSCS Alliance scheme.
Compare the CSCS card routesPrepare the required qualification or registration
A new Labourer application needs the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or an accepted alternative. Skilled, supervisory and management routes need the relevant occupational qualification; training routes may require proof of registration instead. Check whether your existing evidence is accepted before paying for another course.
View the Level 1 Labourer coursePass the correct health and safety test
Most applicants need the appropriate CITB HS&E test passed within the last two years, or an approved alternative. Labourers use the Operatives test; supervisory and management roles require different test levels. Confirm any exemption or renewal exception with CSCS before booking. Keep your test ID and pass report.
Check which CITB test you needGather clear, matching application evidence
Prepare the documents required for your exact route. Your name and other personal details must match your application and supporting records. Use complete, readable certificates or registration evidence, rather than relying on a course-booking receipt or a partial result.
Use the evidence checklistApply, track the decision and answer any queries
Individuals can apply directly through the official My CSCS app. Employers, training providers and third parties use the appropriate CSCS Online account. Check the card, occupation, delivery details and price before paying, then follow the application status and supply any extra evidence requested. Payment is not confirmation that a card has been approved.

Evidence checklist before you apply
The exact documents depend on your route. Prepare these where applicable, and follow the official evidence requirements linked below.
- Your applicant details, current address and access to the email account used for the application.
- The full accepted qualification certificate and any accompanying unit certificates required for your occupation.
- For a training route, the required enrolment form or evidence showing your qualification title, level and registration date.
- Your CITB test ID and pass details, or the evidence for an accepted health and safety test alternative.
- A suitable photograph and photo ID if CSCS requests them. In most cases CSCS uses the photograph from your CITB or CIC test; alternative routes may require an upload.
- Any extra route-specific evidence, such as current professional membership or a Labourer renewal declaration.

How long does getting a card take?
Your timetable depends on the qualification you need, how quickly you complete it, test appointment availability and CSCS checking your evidence. A requested test date is confirmed only after an appointment is arranged.
After CSCS approves an application, the digital card is available in My CSCS. Allow additional time for physical delivery and check the official service's current guidance. Extra evidence requests can delay approval, so do not rely on a promised same-day card or arrange work around an unapproved application.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying a Labourer course or choosing a Green card when your job requires a skilled, supervisory or management route.
- Booking Operatives automatically instead of checking the test level required for your role.
- Assuming a course completion email or a test pass alone is enough to obtain the card.
- Uploading incomplete, blurred or mismatched certificates, registration evidence or photographs.
- Paying twice for an existing application, or treating an application payment as approval. Check the status and answer outstanding queries first.
